The Photon Steam Aging Machine is designed to meet military and commercial Hi-Rel specifications (MIL-STD 202, Method 208, and others) for artificial aging of all electronic components and circuit boards. This includes high density, discrete components, relays, transistors, capacitors, SMT, and axial components.

Artificial steam aging of components must occur within a very narrow temperature range; typically at 93 C +/- 3 degrees.

The Photon System is the only active product that meets this precise control requirement. The thermal accuracy makes the system ideal for component manufacturers and military, commercial, and industrial end users.

The Photon is offered with several configuration options to ensure it meets the needs of each customer. The standard configuration offers a single steam chamber for large components. The machine can be equipped with 3 individually timed, ESD protected drawers with a unique closure mechanism that reduces steam escapement during drawer removal. Both systems provide complete monitoring and control of steam or water temperature and feature automatic timing of the test duration.

To complete the solderability testing process, a Photon machine can be used in conjunction with a Pulsar Solderability Test System. The Pulsar conducts an automated flux and solder dip process to enable the necessary “Dip & Look Test” to validate the solderability of the aged components.

APPLICATIONS OF THE PHOTON STEAM AGING SYSTEM

Artificial steam aging of components must occur over a very narrow temperature range, typically at 93 C +/- 3 degrees. The Photon Steam Aging Systems are the only machines currently on the market that meet this precise control requirement. This thermal accuracy makes the Cadence Systems ideal for component manufacturers and military, commercial, and industrial end users.

OPERATION

Dozens of different product types and tests can be run at the same time. The user simply sets the timer to specify the duration of the test, loads the product and the process will automatically take place and alert the operator when complete.

Constructed of high quality stainless steel, the Photon is virtually unaffected by de-ionized or distilled water. Elapsed time and cycle time are indicated digitally. The cycle timer will not time the cycle unless temperature is within process parameters. Boiler temperature control is accurate to ±3°C from pre-set, with a readout provided. Condensation is always kept away from components. Extensive indicators display operating condition. Select the water source for each system configuration: either carboy stand-alone or inline pressurized water.

SAFETY | EASE OF MAINTENANCE

Steam is always safely vented and safety features prevent leakage, over temp and insufficient steam.

The unit automatically shuts down at the end of the pre-programmed cycle. The cover is designed so that steam is condensed and channeled to the side. Temperature controllers monitor for over-temp and insufficient water and will automatically shut the system down when triggered.

The stainless steel steam vessel is un-impacted by de-ionized, distilled or de-mineralized water. The external coating is high durability to handle the occasional water exposure. The Photon System is virtually maintenance free.

The Pulsar is a proven industry platform that enables the Dip & Look Solderability Test in accordance with the Mil-STD-202, Method 208. The system features a 15 lb-capacity solder pot, a flux station, and X and Z axis control. Designed for lab environments, the table-top system provides high precision PLC motion control, touch screen programming, and PID temperature management for complete process control of the component dip process.

The Pulsar can be configured with a 2nd solder station, enabling lead and lead-free testing. To certify components for storage beyond 12 months, an Photon Steam Aging System can be used to artificially age the components prior to the solderability dip test.

SOLDER MANAGEMENT | DUAL ALLOY READY

The solder pot is constructed of a non-contaminating alloy that is extremely durable, stable and lead-free compatible. The solder is presented as a flat and non-turbulent solder surface for minimal dross production. The 15 pound capacity of the solder pot ensures sufficient solder mass for precision process control; a PID temperature controller regulates the solder temperature up to 350°C within ± 5°C of set point.

The Pulsar can be configured with a 2nd solder station to enable lead and lead-free testing, or alternative temperature testing.

Solderability Testing Equipment

RPS Solderability Testing Systems

The Hentec RPS Pulsar and Photon are proven industry platforms for the Dip & Look Solderability Test and the Steam Aging Test in accordance with IPC and MIL-spec industry standards.

“Dip & Look Test”— The Pulsar provides precise handling of electronic components for the automated process of a flux and solder dip of the component terminations. After the dip process, the operator inspects the terminations (i.e., “look”) for the adequate presence of solder. If adequate, the component is validated for authenticity and solderability with the selected solder alloy.

“Artificial Aging” Test— The Photon provides additional testing capability by artificially aging components prior to the “dip & look test”. The artificial aging is produced by 8-hours of exposure to precision controlled temperature and steam. The J Standard requires steam aging as a component of the solderability test process. This industry specified steam process replicates the impact of 12+ months of storage. After the aging process, the components are brought to the Prelude for solderability testing and, if successful, certification for long-term storage.

“Lead Tinning”— If a component fails a solderability test, RPS offers lead tinning systems to remove old and apply new solder to component terminations.

What is Solderability Testing

  Solderability testing pertains to the process of evaluating the solderability of leads, terminations and wires on an electronic component. The solderability of a lead, termination or surface is defined by its solder wetting characteristics. There are several different ways that solderability testing can be performed, RPS specializes in the “Dip and Look” method.

Steam aging is an automated process to artificial age electronic components and circuit boards, including high density, discrete components. The steam aging process is designed to test components to determine if they meet the military and commercial Hi-Rel specifications MIL-STD 202, Method 208.
